Mary Lena Bowen passed from this life on September 10, 2020, just three days shy of what would have been her 101st birthday. She was born on September 13, 1919 in Rufe, OK to Carl and Mae Speck.
Lena spent most of her life in McCurtain County, OK. She was a longtime member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in the Moran, OK area. As a young lady, she led singing at the Baptist church in Sobol, OK. She was also known as a hard worker, and she would go out and work the fields with her dad. That work ethic carried over into adulthood as she continued to mow her own grass into her late 60s. She worked at the McCurtain County Barn in Valliant, OK for many years. She was also a very good salesperson for Avon. She liked to garden, fish, and work crossword puzzles. She loved animals. She had several dogs through the years, and she had a parrot that she was fond of. Her surviving children affectionately remember her as a wonderful cook, and the best mother a child could ever have.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J.V. Bowen; and four brothers, Malcolm, James, Dennis, and Ray Speck.
She is survived by a son, Troy Bowen of Valliant, OK; daughters, Joyce Powell of Idabel, OK, Betty Jean Whatley of Valliant, OK, and Charlene Efaw of Valliant, OK; brother, Frank Speck (wife, Louise) of Sweet Home, OR; sisters, Mayrene Lewis of Idabel, OK and Fayrene Anderson of Idabel, OK; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.
