Larry D. Cheek, 73, passed from this life January 28, 2020 in Plano, TX. Larry was born January 15, 1947 in Idabel, to Earl “Buddy” and Juanita (Foster) Cheek.
Larry was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Broken Bow and had lived in McCurtain County most of his life. Larry enjoyed raising cattle, riding his motorcycle, and giving his grandchildren rides on the four-wheeler; to Larry his family was the most important. He married the love of his life, Trula Griffin, July 28, 1967 at the Bethel Baptist Church and they spent a wonderful 44 years together until her passing in 2011.
Larry graduated from Battiest High School in 1965 and from college on August 5, 1969. On August 10, 1969, Larry was drafted and sent to Fort Polk, LA, for basic training before arriving in Vietnam. Larry was severely wounded on March 30, 1970 and was honorably discharged as a purple heart recipient. Larry then began his teaching career in Haworth in 1971 before moving to Smithville as an administrator for the next twenty years until retiring.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Buddy and Juanita Cheek; and his loving wife, Trula Cheek.
Larry is survived by his daughters, Julie Parnell, and her husband, Greg, of Watson, and Melissa Walls, and her husband, Roger, of Battiest; sisters, Kay Stowe, and her husband, Darrell, of Rogers, AR, and Vicki King, of Pauls Valley; grandchildren, Melissa Calderon, and her husband, Michael, of Albuquerque, NM, Blaine Parnell, of Reno, NV, Samantha Walls, of Broken Bow, Madeline Walls, of Battiest, Landon Walls, of Battiest, and Kenley Parnell, of Watson; three great-granddaughters; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the McCurtain County Veterans Memorial Museum, PO Box 222, Idabel, OK 74745, or the Battiest Cemetery Fund, c/o Macy Young, PO Box 177, Battiest, OK 74722.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, at 10:00AM at the Brumley Funeral Home Chapel, with Greg Parnell and A.L. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the Battiest Cemetery with military honors.
