Don Arthur Walton, age 82, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma. He was born on Tuesday, September 13, 1938 in El Paso, TX. Raised by John Rolin Walton and Alvera Walton Anderson mainly in Colorado and Oklahoma. Don attended Valliant, Oklahoma and Rangley, Colorado high schools.
Don retired in the United States Navy after serving for 20 years which included the Vietnam War. Don worked as an Air Traffic Controller on such ships as the USS Hancock aircraft carrier. He also spun records as a disc jockey on the ship and utilized those skills several times throughout his life including stints with two local McCurtain County radio stations. Don loved country music and spent many years in the industry. He also managed country music legend Ray Wylie Hubbard. Together they created D&R Entertainment working with up and coming country, christian country, and even a few rock artists with his sons. Don delivered newspapers and eventually became a columnist for the Dallas Times Herald. One of Don's assignments with the Herald was to cover wrestling at such famous venues as the Sportatorium in Ft Worth. Rubbing elbows with the Von Erichs and other famous wrestlers of the day. When things got tough Don would head out on the road as a long-haul trucker at various times throughout his life and enjoyed visiting his family around the country. In his later days Don became a substitute teacher at both Broken Bow and Idabel schools. He loved his kids as he called them. Also coached girls’ softball at Idabel. Don enjoyed playing golf, fishing and watching rodeos. The Lord was very important in Don's life followed by the love for his wife Pat and his family. Don was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who knew him.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Meredith Rene’ Walton.
He is survived by wife, Pat Walton of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; his sons and daughters in law, Steven and Darlene Walton of Caddo Mills, Texas and Scott and Cynthia Walton of Humble, Texas, Audrey Konyha Vigh and Mike Vigh, Sr of Riverview, FL ; one sister, Sarah Henry of Valliant, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Baylor Walton of Greenville, Texas, Steven Walton II of Omaha, Nebraska, Jamie Stevens and Kirsten Whitley of Davenport, IA, Millie and Malerie Walton of Humble, TX; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at the Brumley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ben Pollock officiating. Interment will follow in the Valliant Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 30, 2021 from 6-8 P.M. at the Brumley Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Brumley Funeral Home in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
